Afghans try to pick leaders

Former Afghan rivals, now the harbingers of peace and stability in their desperate country, worked into the early morning Wednesday to decide who will lead an interim government, a regime the international community hopes will begin the process of creating a democratic Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai–a member of the country’s largest ethnic group, the Pashtuns, an anti-Taliban fighter and a favorite of the West–was widely expected to be named chairman, in effect prime minister, of the government.
